HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Ensure that there is adequate insurance cover for the event.
  • Ensure that there are enough stewards and first aiders to cope with the number of expected participants.
  • Emergency exits must be kept clear of obstructions.
  • Trailing cables should be secured to the floor with duct tape or hazard tape.
  • Care must be taken not to overload electrical sockets.
  • If participants will have access to hand tools, machine tools or other hazardous equipment at the venue (e.g. in a D&T workshop), then it will be necessary to impose an appropriate minimum age restriction, and provide adequate adult supervision throughout the event.
  • Children below the age of 10 must not be left unaccompanied at the event.
  • If older children are to be left unaccompanied at the event, you must know how to contact their parents/guardians quickly in case of an emergency.
  • The use of robots with exposed gearboxes, electrical wiring or other hazardous features must be adequately supervised.
  • Participants must not be exposed to DC voltages in excess of 12V.
  • Stewards, first aiders and members of the organising committee should perform a thorough check of the venue for any safety hazards (e.g. obstructed emergency exits, trailing cables, missing first aid kits, missing/discharged fire extinguishers, etc.) shortly before the start of the event. They should continue to keep a lookout for, and remedy/report, safety hazards throughout the event.
